The first site visit was scheduled by Dr. Khadka in lieu of class. We visited the location for the WeLIFTLA housing project to learn about the organization and its needs before we started working on grants.
I had a doctor's appointment the morning of the only day that we all could meet up. I showed up very late, a mix of bad timing, traffic, and unforeseen issues at the doctor's office. Fortunately, I made it in time to meet Joyce Harmon, CEO, and get a brief summary of the nonprofit and a breakdown of the current housing project.
WeLIFT LA serves transitional youth - that is foster youth aging out of the system. Their current project is subsidized housing for Resilient Scholars at CSUN. Resilient Scholars are at risk, usually foster youth, who are recognized for having educational potential, and thus are granted financial aid and a stipend to study. However, there is little to no funding during the summer, which is why this housing project is so important. Very few transitional youth graduate from college; WeLIFTLA hopes to provide a safe, supportive environment to facilitate their success.
